Destructive Choices

They met and fell in love three years ago, their souls entwined and believed they had fiund true love with each other. Both having been married before, and each have two children with their previous partners, a boy and a girl. They thought life was going ok, with goals being met and their savings account going up. Until, one day when their perfect bubble began to burst.

He left his ex wife and their two children to follow his heart, moving to another state and flying over each holidays to spend a weekend with his children, or flying them down to his new home. The only catch, he’s wanting to see them more and more. His ex, blocks his calls and makes it harder on him. He feels guilty for the amount of time he spends with his girlfriends kids, and can’t help but want to move back to be with his own.

She was happy, looking forward to the possibility of owning their own home and thinking life was great as she started a new job and was feeling alive again after the divorce and custody battle. Her children were her world, and she couldn’t help but feel anxious when his were around. She was always kept at arms length, never really being involved with them. She just didn’t think he would up and leave them.

“Were both going to be late for work.” I grinned, finding my feet as he eased out. The shower water spilling over us both. “The kids have their school fair Friday evening, we should grab dinner before we go?” I suggested, starting to wash my hair.

I sighed.  “I was in wanting to go see my kids tomorrow.” I knew she wouldn’t like that but I haven’t seen them in a while and this was the weekend my ex said would be good.

“What? Tomorrow?” I asked making sure I heard clearly. “For how long? You could have given me some notice.” I hated how he always done this. I hated his ex even more and wished they would get a divorce. Gritting my teeth, I washed my hair. “How much are flughts?@

I stopped and looked at her. “Yes tomorrow and not cheap that’s why I’m going there and not bringing them here.” That and I wanted time alone with just them.  But I couldn’t really tell her that.

“Oh” I was never included. “Well that’ll be nice to see them.” I had to wonder if his daughter would throw another epic meltdown or his son be as sly as he is and hit her when he wasn’t watching. “You’ll be home when?”

“Either Sunday night or Monday afternoon. Depends on some things.” I pulled her to me “Don’t worry I’ll call you every night.” After showering we got dressed for work. I kissed her goodbye and headed out knowing she was upset but what could I do.

I sat there stewing over what he said at work. It frustrates me. He never invited me. Never spoke about me to the kids. I’m just the girl he lives with according to the ex. -how’s work?- I text him.

I was so busy I didn’t hear my phone at first but when I checked the time I noticed she texted -sorry it’s been crazy here, how’s your day going-

I rolled my eyes -it’s good, can you bring some steak home for dinner. I forgot to pick some up yesterday -‘I went back.

I sighed. -yeah I can do that.- I went back to work and by the time I got
Out of there I had forgotten the steak she asked for as I got home I went straight to packing and getting ready for my weekend. I couldn’t wait to see the kids.

“Hey where’s the steak?” I knew he had forgotten it. I ordered pizza and chips instead.

“Hunter are you coming to the fair tomorrow?” Lola asked sitting in the bed beside him “where are you going?”

I smiled “I’m making a trip back to where I use to live to see some people.” I didn’t know what to say I looked at gabby. “I’m sorry it was a busy day at work.”

“Clearly.” He changed whenever his kids were involved and I don’t like it. “Come on Lola, you can come get dinner with me. We won’t be long, oh Noah is on the Xbox.”

I nodded and went back to packing. Once done I checked on Noah. “Hey you hungry?” I asked because I was getting hungry.

“Yeah, want to play with me?” He asked holding up the spare controller. “I’m playing fort nite!” He said as the door opened “were back! Sorry it’s a late dinner you guys, let’s eat and then you two have to go to bed.”

I smiled “raincheck little dude!” I then walked out to go get some food and most likely get dirty looks from gabby. I hated it but I still wanted my kids to myself I didn’t want to share them and I know it’s not fair but that’s how I feel.

“I don’t know why you’re being so rude to everyone, especially the kids. If they go back and tell Josh then he will probably take me back to court for another custody battle.” I wasn’t sure what was going on lately, he was moodier and pulling away at times.

I looked st her. “I haven’t been rude. I just told your boy we would plant another time. How is that rude?” I shook my head. “Your ex just has issues.” I pulle dsome pizza out. I hated this. “You always do this when I mention going to see my kids. Always pick fights.”

“Because I’m annoyed that it was sprung on me only yesterday. You never invite me to come, it’s like you don’t want me to get to know them so how am I meant to react? I’m happy you get to see them, I truly am. I just know your ex is going to pull some stunt to try get you back.” I hated her, she was the definition of crazy.

I laughed. “She doesn’t want me back trust me. And every time my kids have came here you get all cranky, so I like to spend alone time with them there isn’t anything wrong with that, I don’t invite you because you get so mad when they are here.” I shook my head no longer hungry. “I’m going to bed.”

I rolled my eyes and looked at him “blame me for everything.” I took my plate going to sit with the kids. I hated fighting and this awkward arguing. I remembered the last time they came here, he turned his back and the brother punched the sister in the stomach so I had told him not to do that again and how we don’t hurt people. He ran to his dad crying that I yelled. I put my kids to bed, and then came into our room. I wasn’t sure if he was asleep when I laid down and turned the light off.

She laid down and I pulled her to me without a word I kissed her head an djust held her. I hated this but I didn’t know how to correct it or if I wanted to she obviously didn’t want my kids here so I’m going to them I want to see them have a relationship with them.
