I was just getting home when my phone rang a lawyer I never thought I’d hear from again. A call I never thought I’d get. I have some good spots, I can show you.”  She had jokes this one but I liked that she liked to get out and do things it was a good change.  “Hiking and exploring is not boring Ella.” As we got into my car the drive was quiet but once we pulled up I said.  “Anything here is yours to Ella don’t let Carla scare you okay? She is all talk.”

“Yeah, dad said that.” I said under my breath not meaning to. “Don’t worry, I won’t get in her way. I’m just tired, so I’ll sleep for awhile.” I got out and looked at the house. “I’m not really hungry, so you don’t have to worry about waking me for dinner.”

I sighed and got out. “Ella, you need to eat something so if you’re sleeping I’ll leave a sandwich by your bed okay.” Her bringing up her dad hurt. I could tell. I haven’t really had the time to think about it either and I know I’ll break at one point. “Let me show you to your room.”

“Thanks.” I followed him inside, and spotted who I guessed was his wife. “Hi.” I gave a small wave, nervously.

“Umm who’s this?” Carla asked, confused.

I sighed. “Not now Carla let me show her to her room then I’ll explain everything.” God Ella doesn’t need her shit. I don’t need her shit. I kept walking with Ella following me. “Okay so here is your room and you have a en-suite so you shouldn’t have to worry, anything you need just let me know and I’ll get it or I’ll let you use the car and my card to get whatever you need okay?” God I hated seeing her look so sad.

“I won’t need much, like I said in basic.” I shrugged sitting down on the bed and taking off my shoes. “But I’ll let you know if I need anything.” That’s formed in my eyes, and I tried to let them pass but they spilled out and I hated it. I missed them so much.

I stepped closer and pulled her into my arms. “She Ella please don’t cry.” I held her close and didn’t want to let go. “One day when your ready I want you tell me how they lived. But right now just sleep little one.”

“Ok.” I whispered, it felt good to hug someone again. I haven’t been hugged since the accident. No one to speak to. I looked up, pulling away as I spotted his wife and dried my eyes on my sleeve. “Thanks, I’m going to get some rest now.” I mumbled, not sure if I could sleep or not

I sighed and glanced over and saw a pissed of Carla. I shook my head. “Okay I’m here if you need me.” I went to walk out. “I’ll make you something and put it on the bedside table if you’re asleep. Feel free to shower if you need clothes I’m sure Carla has some you can borrow or I have some old shirts if you want those.”

“Thanks. Maybe an old shirt, I prefer baggier than right.” I said, pulling the covers back. “Thankyou.”

Carla walked up to Zane in the bedroom, whisper yelling “umm care to explain what the fuck is going on?! Like how am I meant to be ok with you just bringing a stranger into our home!”

I turned and looked at her. “First she really isn’t a stranger. “That’s ella! Ella Simpson! You know my best friend daughter!” I was now getting pissed. “She doesn’t have anyone! Her parents just died!” I sat on the bed and held the shirt in my hands. I ran my hand down my face. “They left and I’m now suppose to be her guardian Carla! Whether you like it or not!”

“You’re kidding, we didn’t have children for a reason and now I’m meant to take in a grown child! This is not fair. I have work, how can I take care of her? She’s your responsibility!” She groaned, and rolled her eyes.

I looked at her. “My best friends are dead Carla!” I couldn’t believe she was making this about her. I mean maybe I can but to actually see it. “She is alone! Carla don’t be selfish! She will need us both.”

“Whatever.” She sighed, shaking her head. “There’s take out menus in the drawer. I’m sure she would want something other than a sandwich, maybe order in a salad or something.” She sighed, rolling her eyes again. “I’m heading to bed shortly, I’m tired.”

I shook my head. I got up and took the shirt to Ella. I knocked lightly. “Ella I have clothes and well take out menus Carla thought maybe you’d like something other than a sandwich.”

I was just laying there when the door was starting to open. “Maybe a grilled cheese sandwich would be nice.” I said softly. “I’m not that hungry, and I like sandwiches.” I sat up, looking at the shirt. “Thanks.”

I smiled. “I can make a grilled cheese I actually remember you saying once I made the best cheesy sandwiches!” I laughed as I remembered her saying it mispronouncing all the words. She was so cute as a child. But she isn’t a child anymore. She is as sexy young woman.i cleared my throat. “Umm go ahead and change I’ll just go make us some cheesy sandwiches.”
